TC Industries is the industry leader in commercial heat treating, annealing, quenching & tempering and normalizing of commercial size bars, plates and rounds of carbon and alloy steel.

TC Industries spans the U.S., Canada and Europe (UK).

The TC Industries Test Center provides Visual Inspection in support of the Mill Products Division and the Processed Steel Company.

Visual Inspection

Visual inspection techniques include metallography, wet and dry particle magnetic inspection, as well as macro photography. Metallographic analysis involves precise sectioning a metallic sample followed by polishing and etching to reveal microstructure. Decarburization depth measurements from metallographic analysis are part of our A2LA scope. Wet and dry particle magnetic inspection techniques use a powerful magnetic field to push small magnetic particles into areas where there is a disruption in the field caused by a crack or other gross surface or internal defect. Macro photography provides an overview of a fracture surface and context for further metallographic analysis of a local area.

Capabilities

  • State of the art Nikon inverted metallurgical microscope with high resolution photomicrography capabilities. Magnifications from 50X to 500X are possible. Photomicrography is in accordance with ASTM E883.
  • Color video macro camera with stand and color monitor and printer for taking macro photographs of samples and parts.
  • Three wet abrasive saws for sectioning samples.
  • Buehler mounting press, belt grinder, grinding wheels and polishing wheels for preparing samples for viewing on the microscope. Sample preparation is in accordance with ASTM E3.
  • H720 Magnaflux unit for wet magnetic particle inspection. Several magnetic yokes are available for dry magnetic particle inspection. Magnetic particle inspection is for metallurgical analysis only - we are not equipped to handle large production runs.
